Spelling - SATS preparation for weeks 3 and 4
In preparation for the exams, we will be doing SATS spelling tests on the next two Fridays.
This exam tests children's knowledge of words in the Year 3/4 and Year 5/6 spelling lists.
Please ask your child to test themselves - or even better, you could test them - using the lists below.
We hope you and your family have had a great Easter break.
This week it's straight back to work as we have SATS in just a few weeks (the week beginning May 14th)!
In a way it's like a footballer or gymnast getting ready for their big match/contest. The training continues right up to the last minute and for Y6 this means tremendous concentration while in class and doing homework. It means constantly trying our best and challenging ourselves. Just like athletes, with constant training, we can prepare ourselves so that we can feel excited and ready to do our best on the big day!
For Y6 this also means being honest about what we find difficult and asking parents and teachers questions like, "Please show me how to do long division," or, "Can you tell me what a clause is?"
Just like athletes, Y6 need their rest and over the next few weeks it's a good idea for children to be in bed on time so they are refreshed and raring to go in the morning.
On your marks....get set.......
Easter holiday homework - SATS practice
This Easter holiday we would like you to practise your SATS skills. This will mean that you come back to school next term full of confidence, knowing that you are well on the way to getting your best possible score.
You need to spend around an hour a day on your work. It might sound like a lot, but why not do half an hour in the morning and half an hour in the evening?
Please look at the spelling lists below. One is the spellings you're expected to know at Y5/6 and the other is a list of the words that come up most frequently in the tests.
Please finish the practice exercises in your revision packs by the end of the holidays. If you get a chance to read your book as well that's great but you really need to develop your skill in answering SATS-style questions.
If you've bought a grammar practice book please continue to work hard on the exercises. If you haven't, there are some excellent books on Amazon or in WH Smith. The CGP books are really good. Make sure that whatever book you use it's for the SATS KS2 test.
Use the arithmetic checklist and look at your maths papers to find out the areas that need work. In the arithmetic paper, all the methods have been covered in class. Most of them have videos explaining the methods on youtube. If you do really really well in arithmetic you make sure you stand a really good chance in the whole test, so make sure you know exactly how to do long division, adding/ subtraction, multiplying/dividing by 10,100,1000 etc - all those tricky calculations you kind of know how to do but are not quite sure about. Now's your chance to really get to grips with them!
Epping Forest Trip
Next Friday, 16th March, is Year 6's trip to the Epping Forest Field Centre. The coach must leave no later than 9am so please could pupils be in school by 8:45am.
Please keep an eye on the weather forecast for the day. Children need to wear wellie boots, if they have them, but old shoes/trainers should be fine - depending on the weather -so fingers crossed!. Pupils should attend school in their normal school uniform, wearing their normal school shoes, and have their change of footwear in a bag. Coats and/or a waterproof are also required.
Packed lunches can be brought in carrier bags or rucksacks. Please get in touch if you have any questions.
Miss Georgiou & Mr Lurie
Please also remember to bring in your "Poles Explorer" homework on Monday.
There's no literacy homework this week or next as the children should be working on their geography projects. As we've allowed over three weeks for this we're expecting to see a high standard of work which reflects just how much effort your child has put into the task.
We also hope you and your child are now well into practising their reading and maths skills using the revision pack. Please let us know if you have any questions regarding the tests.
Mr Lurie and Ms Georgiou
Please review all your spelling from this term (scroll down to find each week's). There will be a test on Monday 19th February.

Hello Year 6,
You have been given two SATs practice papers to complete (Paper 1 arithmetic and Paper 2 reasoning) as homework for over the Christmas Break. Please remember the following:
(However, for more of a challenge, try to complete the papers within the specified times.)
Have a lovely break and see you in the New Year!

Y6 trip to Lincolnsfields WW2 Centre, October 6th
This was a great day trip, which provided a fascinating insight into what life was like for children and adults in the 1940's. We learnt about how very different things were back then; teachers and parents were very strict (teachers could even hit children!); food was rationed; there was no TV; and you didn't throw away broken toys and torn clothes - you made do and mended! We can't even imagine what it was like to live like that AND know that at any time you could be bombed out of your home or even killed during an air raid.
One of the many highlights was listening to a WW2 veteran, Stan, talking of his experiences as a 19-year-old soldier.
The Walker children were a credit to the school. Thanks to you and to your parents for making such an effort with costumes - you looked fantastic.
I think it's fair to say that the children not only enjoyed themselves immensely but, that they also learned so much through such a hands-on experience.

Some parents have mentioned that the children are only given three evenings to do homework and have asked for this period to be extended.
We would like the system to stand as it is because it helps to prepare children for similar deadlines when they attend secondary school.
We were asked to consider giving children a book for them to write down their working out when doing MyMaths homework.
We feel that as this work is a consolidation of class work, where correct working out and presentation are closely monitored, it is up to the children and/or parents as to how this is carried out at home.
