ABOUT THE GOVERNORS
The Governing Body is responsible for the leading strategic direction of Walker Primary School and we do this through the development, monitoring and evaluation of our School Improvement Plan. The primary purpose of the Governing Body is to make a positive difference for children. We do this through leadership, not management and in partnership with the Headteacher.
Strategic decisions are taken at meetings of the Full Governing Body, which are held in the second half of every term. More detailed discussions take place at either the Staffing & Curriculum Committee or our Finance & Premises Committee as appropriate. As well as being a member of a committee, each governor has a specialist “Link” area to a core subject or improvement plan priority.
The Governing Body is made up of twelve talented individuals, bringing a variety of complementary skills. We have high expectations for Walker! We seek evidence that the school is improving as a result of the strategic decisions we make. We do this through by reviewing the evaluations made by the Headteacher and her team and agreeing the priorities for the school. We regularly visit the school and talk to children and staff. We value feedback from parents and other stakeholders.
Alison was elected as a Parent Governor in October 2016. Her professional background is working in the NHS and currently she is a freelance consultant for Macmillan Cancer Support and the Royal Free Hospital Charity. She also volunteers at Walker Primary School, providing reading support. Her experience of working within financial constraints while delivering and developing the best services possible, are valuable skills she brings to the board.
Christina Scordellis, Co-opted Governor
Child Protection and Safeguarding Governor
Christina has a strong affinity with the vision and values of Walker Primary School, having first been elected a parent governor in 2006, then appointed a Community Governor and now a Co-opted Governor. An active member of the “Friends of Walker” during her time as a Walker parent, Christina remains in close contact with our ‘extended’ Walker family of past parents and pupils. During her time as a governor, Christina has served on every committee including the Headteacher Appointment Panel. She is a regular visitor to school. Christina is our link Governor for Child Protection.
David Fry, Parent Governor
Chair of the Finance & Premises Committee
David was elected as a Parent Governor in 2013. He has over 20 years experience working as a government statistician across Whitehall, holding positions within the Office for National Statistics, HM Treasury and the DTI. Currently Deputy Director of Strategic Statistics at the DCLG, David is responsible for the management and analysis of a major social survey –the English Housing Survey – he has contributed to thinking on the national minimum wage and examining the pay of MP’s. David says that none of this experience prepared him for working with Walker School pupils in the analysis of their annual pupil survey! David is a Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society and a Fellow of the Centre for Science and Policy at the University of Cambridge. David is Chair of the Finance & Premises Committee and specialist link governor for Maths and IT/Computing and E Safety.
Ella Marriott, Co-opted Governor
Vice Chair of the Governing Body
Ella has been a Governor since 2010, first elected as a Parent Governor and later co-opted to the Governing Body. Ella holds a senior position within a large public sector organisation and brings skills in investigation, negotiation, personnel and budget management to the Board of Governors. Ella’s children attend Walker. Ella has previously acted as Chair of the Staffing & Curriculum Committee and as Safeguarding Child Protection Governor. Ella is a member of our Finance & Premises Committee and is Link Governor for Science. Ella was elected Vice Chair of the Governing Body in November 2015.
Frances Warhurst, Headteacher
I have been a Headteacher for over 11 years at Firs Farm Primary and most recently Churchfield Primary. I have worked as an Executive Headteacher for Cambridge Education visiting schools to support school improvement and educational change. I also continue to train Headteachers at the Institute of Education. I have high expectations in all aspects of school life from ensuring quality first teaching to a smart uniform. I believe in the correct behaviour for learning and I am deeply committed to children taking on roles of responsibility in order to prepare them for their life ahead. I value partnership with all the stakeholders at Walker and look forward to working with you to achieve the very best for your child.
Hannah Newton, Parent Governor
Hannah was elected as a Parent Governor in 2013. Prior to her election Hannah had been involved for many years with the Friends of Walker, our Parent Association. Hannah was a Class Rep, Sponsorship and Advertising team leader and later Vice Chair of the Friends. She was elected Chair of the Friends in the School’s 60th Jubilee Year in 2013. Hannah’s professional background is in HR and Recruitment. She currently works for a local business and community group, Love Your Doorstep. She is also a member of Enfield Council’s Parent Engagement Panel, involved in its journey towards becoming an independent charity in 2016. Hannah is passionate about opportunity for all and maintaining excellent links between home and school. Hannah is a member of the Staffing & Curriculum Committee and link Governor for English and the School Improvement Plan Priority for improving behaviour and welfare of all pupils.
Manny Kanabe, Local Authority Governor
Emmanual Kanabe was appointed as a Local Authority Governor in 2014 bringing skills in leadership, financial management, team working, project and change management to the Board of Governors. Manny is a Chartered Accountant with an MBA and over 20 years experience. Manny is CEO of iGeneration Consulting and CFO for numerous other companies, working with key business leaders from all over the globe on a variety of projects – ranging from supporting the Post Office Network to develop an exciting new tech platform, to some of the biggest international airlines. Manny is a Virgin Startup Mentor, helping entrepreneurs to follow their dreams. Manny lives locally and his son attends Keble Preparatory School. He hopes to use his entrepreneurial flair to inspire children at Walker to achieve their dreams. Manny is a member of the Staffing & Curriculum Committee and is Link Governor for Assessment and Targeting.
Melanie Dawson, Parent Governor
Chair of the Staffing & Curriculum Committee, Inclusion Governor
Melanie was elected as a Parent Governor in 2012. She has two children at Walker. Trained as a lawyer, Melanie now volunteers as a magistrate and, as well as considering adult cases, sits on the Youth Court Bench, considering cases involving young people aged between 10 and 17. Melanie is a regular visitor to school as a volunteer. She has delivered workshops about her role as a Magistrate. She currently supports children in Year 1 with reading. As well as being a busy Mum and volunteer, Melanie works as a literacy tutor. She is passionate about ensuring every child achieves their full potential. Melanie is our Link Governor for Inclusion and Chair of the Staffing & Curriculum Committee.
Mirella Nicolau, Staff Governor
Mirella has worked at Walker Primary School as a Learning Support Assistant since April 2015 and has been appointed Team Leader for “The Snug” which supports children with learning needs. Previously she worked in a primary school in Edmonton as a Teaching Assistant and in addition supported children with learning needs. She has been volunteering in primary schools for over a decade, helping teachers with children that needed more support, whilst also bringing up her own family. Mirella believes that a happy school = happy children! Mirella is a member of the Staffing & Curriculum Committee.
Phillip Dawson, Co-opted Governor
Chair of the Governing Body
Phillip joined the Governing Body in 2008 and is a Co-opted Governor, bringing skills in communication, strategic planning, project management and complaint handling. Phillip is a Director of a firm of architects. He is active in charitable and community based organisations in Southgate. He is currently Churchwarden at Christ Church Southgate, Chairman of the Enfield Talking Newspaper and a Trustee of the Southgate Cultural Fund. He has previously been a Non-Executive Director of St Pancras & Humanist Housing Association. Before joining the Board of Walker Primary School, Phillip was a Governor at Carterhatch Junior School in Enfield. He wrote a handbook for Governors on school finance which is now used across the borough. Phillip enjoys visiting the school; he is a regular judge in the Year 4 “Cook off” and was previously a “Money and Number Partner” in Year 3. Phillip was elected Chair of the Governing Body of Walker Primary School in 2013. He is Link Governor for the Pupil Premium, PE Premium and PE Curriculum.
Stelios Eliades, Parent Governor
Stelios was elected as a Parent-Governor in December 2015. He is a former pupil of this school and has lived in Southgate since 1976. From January 2009 until December 2015, Stelios was the primary carer for his children. Stelios is a member of the Staffing & Curriculum committee and the Early Years link governor.
