Learning a foreign language provides an opening to other cultures.
Language education fosters children's curiosity and deepens their understanding of the world.
The teaching of languages enable our children to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and learn to respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing.
It provides opportunities for them to communicate for practical purposes, new ways of thinking, reading literature in its original language and equip them with skills for future study and work in other countries

NEWS AND EVENTS...
Y3 had the pleasure of playing some language games with two visiting students from UCL who introduced the children to Mandarin Chinese. PhD students worked with Y3 to enhance a research on how children learn foreign languages. Children enjoyed learning Mandarin and were very excited that they will learn more in Y5 and Y6. UCL have made a promise to return next year and have donated a book voucher for the 2 classes.
Y5 They have now started and are enjoying the Mandarin Chinese classes! They are doing really well. Keep it up!!
Mrs Song has kindly been helping Mrs Lucas and the children with the pronunciation and intonation as well as writing the pin yin and Chinese characters.

Mrs Song, the mother of Peter(3S) is currently assisting the classes every Thursday afternoon in Y5 and Friday mornings in Y6.
Mrs Li assisted Y6 classes with their pronunciation and intonation as well as with writing their Chinese characters.

In Mandarin lesson we ....
Y6 Will learn to say what nationality they are in Mandarin. They will be able to identify the 4 main tones and how important these are. They will identify where they live when asked and say how many siblings they have. They will identify other family members and use adjectives to describe them.They will also identify the countries which border China and learn about China's diverse culture.
Y5 Will be introduced to Chinese, Mandarin. They will be learning greetings, numbers to 100, names of food items and be able to converse using simple words and phrases. They will also be studying the Chinese culture including the Dragon Boat Festival, The Chinese New Year and the other important events on the Lunar calendar and learning names of food items associated with these.
Y4 will be naming various Francophone countries. They will be able to say what language they speak and what nationality they are and be able to use 3rd person pronouns to describe someone else.
They will learn to name various weather types and get to know French towns and their position on the map.
Y3 Will be learning how to greet each other in French. They will learn the names of some musical instruments and identify masculine and positive articles. They will learn to name animals- pets, farm and zoo animals.
Learning another language raises awareness of the multilingual and multicultural world and introduces an integral dimension to pupils' learning.
