Science: Plants

14.05.20: My thoughts on the investigation

1. My hypothesis (prediction) was that the control plant would grow the tallest.

2. I am very surprised that the plant that received no water throughout the investigation is the tallest. I thought that the stem of this plant would be limp, and the leaves would be dry and papery.

3. When I learned that plants that are kept in the dark actually grow taller very quickly, I thought that the plant that received no light would be the tallest. But it is actually the shortest. Now I did drop the plant, and a stem broke off ... but even if I take that into account, it still wouldn't have been the tallest plant.

4. I know that the leaves of the plant that received no light were beginning to go yellow. This is because the plant didn't have sunlight to make chlorophyll (which is what makes plants green).

5. Even though the control plant didn't grow to be the tallest, it has the largest number of leaves, and the largest leaves as well when compared to the other two plants. So it is possible that the plant used it's nutrients to grow more leaves, instead of focusing on growing taller.

6. If the point above is correct, then the control plant could be considered to be the healthiest!

7. However, the mystery of how the plant that received no water still lives and grows healthily is a mystery. Perhaps it is because it is still surviving on the food that was stored in the bean? (The remains of the bean seed are still attached to the plant... It's fallen off in the other two plants...)

8. Sometimes investigations and experiments don't go as planned, that is why scientists conduct the investigation/experiment several times.

Plant investigation - Day 8 3 Plant with no light - 21.8cm
11.05.20 - I am finding it very surprising that the plant with no water is still growing taller and taller... Maybe it is collecting moisture from the air? Also, The control plant has lots of leaves and I have noticed that the leaves are growing bigger with each day. The control plant also has new leaves growing. The tops of the plant with no light has turned yellow.

Plant investigation - Day 7

Plant investigation - Day 7 1 Control plant - 22.3cm
Plant investigation - Day 7 2 Plant with no water - 21.5cm
Plant investigation - Day 7 3 Plant with no light - 20.8cm
09.05.20 - I accidentally dropped the 'plant with no light' and one of the stems snapped off... oops...

06.05.20 - My thoughts on the investigation so far:

1. I noticed that the plant with no light is growing at a quicker rate than the control plant. I think this is quite odd, so I conducted some secondary research and I found out that plants do actually grow quicker in the dark.

Plant Growth in Darkness

Plants grow fast in the dark, and do so because they operate on circadian cycles. According to ScienceDaily.com, university research revealed that plants exhibit growth in predawn hours, and cease growth in daylight. In simplistic terms, it makes sense that plants would grow at night since daylight activity consists of absorbing light for photosynthesis.

(A circadian cycle is how an organism reacts to light and dark.)

2. I also noticed that the top leaves of the plant that is receiving no light are a lighter green than the other leaves.

3. I noticed that the plant with no water is actually growing pretty well! I think this is because the last time I had watered the plant was the day before the investigation started. So perhaps there has been enough water in the soil to sustain the growth so far. Maybe in a few days, the plant will begin to look different.

4. The control plant doesn't seem to have grown as much as I thought it would. I wonder why that is the case...

What have you noticed about your plants?

Plant investigation - Day 2

Plant investigation - Day 2 1 Control plant - 16.9cm
Plant investigation - Day 2 2 Plant with no water - 12.4cm
Plant investigation - Day 2 3 Plant with no light - 16.5cm

04.05.20 - After I had re-sowed 2 of the bean plants, only one of them grew. So this means that we only have three plants to carry out the investigation.

This is what I will do in my investigation:

1 plant will be the control plant where nothing will be changed.

1 plant will not receive any water.

1 plant will be placed in the dark.

Plant investigation - Day 1

Plant investigation - Day 1 1 Control plant. 16.8cm.
Plant investigation - Day 1 2 Plant with no water.
Plant investigation - Day 1 3 Plant with no water 8cm.
Plant investigation - Day 1 4 Plant with no light. 15.5cm
Plant investigation - Day 1 5 I placed the plant inside a box.
Plant investigation - Day 1 6

Rose has been investigating the function of stems, using food colour. What do you notice in the petals? What does this tell us?

27.04.20: The two bean plants has had to be re-sowed aren't showing any signs of growth yet...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

16.04.20: Two of the bean plants didn't germinate. (The beans actually had a bit of white fungus on them.) So, I put new beans into the pot, and hopefully they'll germinate with shoots and roots...
