Early Reading & Phonics
Phonics at Walker
We follow the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised programme.
We assess the children in phonics each term to monitor their progress and ensure that we are teaching them to match their phonics ability. In Reception we teach the children phase 2, 3 and 4. Year 1 consolidate all Reception sounds and teach phase 5.
We introduce sounds and use these sounds to blend for reading and segment for writing.
Children take home a reading book that match their known phonics sounds.
Children are tested in June of Y1 using the Government’s Phonics Screening Check.
